I’m really not a big meat eater, so I have to find alternative sources of protein.  I also need to have several snacks during the day to keep my energy up.  Thus, a high protein snack option is a great choice for me between meals.  I like to make trail mix in bulk so I have 15-20 bags waiting for me premade when I’m looking for a quick snack.  Saves me from grabbing for the chips or something else no healthy.  Here’s how to make your own trail mix.

I like to make my own trail mix so I can customize it to my tastes.  I don’t like raisins, and a few other store-bought typical trail mix add ins just aren’t my favorite.  Also, I like more unique add-ins like pepitas and sunflower seeds.   Pumpkin seeds have crazy good health benefits and are a great source of vitamins and minerals.  Same with sunflower seeds!  I also love to add just a few chocolate chips in for a sweet taste in some bites.

Here’s my go-to ingredients list for DIY trail mix

  • Walnuts, cashews, almonds, or pecans
  • Pepitas
  • Craisins (or raisins if you prefer)
  • Sunflower kernels
  • Chocolate chips
  • Dried Fruit (I like the medley!)

How to make your own trail mix:

Assembly is so easy!  Mix all the ingredients together in one big bowl.  You can adjust quantities to suit your tastes.  I like to make large quantities of trail mix each time I make it, so I use several bags of ingredients.

I also like a lot of nuts because they fill me up and give me energy.  That’s why there’s so many walnuts in this picture!  (This batch of DIY trail mix had walnuts, pepitas, sunflower seeds, dried cranberries, dried fruit, coconut, and chocolate chips.)  They’re dark chocolate chips, so they do have health benefits! (At least this is my rationale to myself on why I need so many in my trail mix…)

Then, portion out a small handful of the mixture into each plastic bag.  And that’s it! For me, these have kept well in my pantry for several weeks.

As a note, while this snack idea contains lots of healthy vitamins and minerals as well as protein and good fats, this is not a low calorie snack, so don’t consume massive quantities in each sitting!
