This quick tutorial today will show you how to make your own DIY children’s art display to go over a door. This easy project is a perfect gift for a grandmother! It’s inexpensive, easy to make, and thoughtful as well!
We have a budding artist in the family.
My 2-year old loves to draw. Not that her scribbles look like anything, but the act of writing and coloring are so joyous to her. She produces a lot of art and a lot of “portraits” of people she knows. Her two cousins also like to make art, and they often come home from preschool with all sorts of creations. We have our own RIKTIG art wall at our house, but up until this gift, my mom did not have any way to display her grandkids’ art. Not even her fridge is magnetic!
So I made a DIY art display gift for my mom!
For my mom’s birthday this year, I decided to make her a over-the-wall art holder to display her art from the three grandchildren! I wanted to make something that allowed for art pieces to be rotated as well as something that would hold several pieces of art for each child. (And yes, we call her Gramster. I had a real fascination with Scooby Doo as a child and called her Romster for forever…so it only made sense for her to be Gramster!)
The below picture is the finished over-the-wall art hanger:
How I Made This DIY Kid’s Art Hanger
An over the door hanger that I purchased from Walmart served as the base of the art display. It cost me $6, and I was able to pick it up in store. It had five silver hangers on the top of the display and five on the bottom. With three grandchildren currently, this would be perfect-each grandchild would get their own hanger for their art.
The center of the wall hanger was see-through, so I needed to do something about that. So, I made a little plaque to go in the middle using some thick folded card stock covered with fabric that I Mod Podged to the card stock. I glued scrapbook sticker letters to the front, and I ultimately glued the plaque to the center of the hanger.
After that, it was time to make the ribbons to hold the art. I used three burlap ribbons and cut them to the length of the door that I desired. I folded the tops of the burlap over and glued them around colored twine. Each twine was then tied into a bow and placed around the hook.
I added some sequins to the top of the ribbons for a little extra pizzazz. These were simply glued on the ribbons.
To hold the art pieces, I made decorative clothespins to match the color of the fabric using Washi tape. It was really simple to put it on the top of the clothespin to change its color. Bonus in that there was no glue involved!
I lastly clipped the clothespins on the ribbons fairly equidistant from each other. It’s a nice feature that the clothespins are movable, so larger and smaller art pieces can be accommodated!
And that’s how my mom now displays the grandkids’ art! She also loved her gift, I think!
