I’m looking forward to establishing holiday traditions in our family now that we have a family of four.  As a kid, I fondly remember all the fun things my mom had planned for holidays for us.  I want to do the same thing with my kids.  Now that Easter is around the corner, I’m looking for some new Easter ideas.  Sewing an Easter pillowcase is one idea I came up with as an Easter tradition.  (Well, besides the obvious: church and Easter egg hunt!!)

Sewing Holiday Pillowcases

I’ve set out to make my daughter pillowcases for every holiday. A few weeks before the holiday, I get out the pillowcase and let her sleep with it until the holiday. Getting to sleep on a new, fun pillowcase makes her even more excited about the upcoming holiday.  It also gives her some more information about events timing.  For example, Valentine’s Day happens after Christmas, and then comes Easter, Fourth of July, and more.

Right now my daughter uses a toddler pillow that I’ve made several little pillowcases for. Pretty soon she’s going to move to a big girl bed, and it will be time to buy a big girl pillow! Thus, I need to get all of my seasonal pillowcases ready. These seasonal pillowcases are expected to last for much longer than her brief time with the toddler pillow, so I was looking for a little something snazzier than the quick and functional toddler pillowcase I sewed.

Her Easter Pillowcase

Here’s the finished Easter pillowcase.  It’s hard to tell from the picture, but the fabric has a little glitter to it. I like the fun pastel colors and the bunnies hiding among the eggs.

I used the measurements and instructions for this DIY pillowcase tutorial here. The one thing I didn’t take into account was that one yard of fabric will work well if your fabric is not directional. In the case of my Easter bunnies here, the fabric was directional, and I should have purchased more than one yard if I wanted to have my bunnies horizontal on the pillow when laid down. Sigh. That’s what I get for not thinking through instructions before purchasing fabric.

Either way, once I decided to sew a kid’s Easter pillowcase for my daughter, and it was fast and easy to make!  I can’t wait to give it to her next year in order to excite her for the holiday.

What Easter tradition ideas do you have?  I’m definitely open to suggestions!
